Draftsman - Industrial Maintenance (5049)

Position Overview

Commercial Metals Company is currently seeking an experienced Draftsman at our steel mill in Southern California, to prepare high quality, accurate, drawings through the interpretation of maintenance plans and observations of the Rolling Mill. Drawings will need to follow industry and company standards to provide the necessary improvement plans for safety, production, and manufacturing projects.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Proficient in use of Computer-aided design (CAD) to draft mechanical industrial equipment for rebar manufacturing. The drawings must have all specification, methods and coding for proper machining, construction, cutting and welding.
Knowledge needed for the job are the following but not limited to:

  • Understand tech drawing coding and application for various types of welding; surface finishing; material (different steel grades application); types of threading; industrial piping; types of springs.
  • Understand tech drawing coding and application of different tolerances, such as for – upper and lower deviation, min and max size.
  • Understand tech drawing coding and application of types of mechanical hole tolerances (ISO 286); mechanical fit tolerances (shrink-fit, press-fit, interference-fit etc).
  • Have a good level of understanding of various type of heat treatment with its respective applications.
  • Have a good level of understanding of bearing application, bushing and bushing materials application.
  • Have a good level of understanding and application of chains, sprockets, cables, studs, nuts, washers etc.
  • Have good understanding of pneumatic cylinder/valves and systems (tech drawing codes and application), hydraulic cylinder/valves and systems (tech drawing codes and application).
  • Have a good understanding of lubrication and its application (able to specify correct type of lubricant etc).
  • Good understanding of following concepts – pressure, torque, leverage etc.
  • Good understanding of machining and fabrication processes.
Experience and Skill Requirements
  • Strong safety mindset.

  • Have the ability to identify needs for improvement.
  • Have the ability to design, plan and execute improvement projects.
  • 5-10 years of of experience as a draftsman in an heavy industrial organization.
  • 5 years of heavy industrial experience in supporting maintenance.
  • Will be required to demonstrate the use of AutoCAD.
Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma.
  • 2 to 4 year degree preferred.
