Position Overview

Plan, layout, setup, and perform or direct repairs to a wide variety of worn or damaged machine, fabricated, forged, or welded metal parts to salvage or maintain plan structures, machines, equipment specified by sketches, diagram, sample parts, or work pieces. Builds and develops auxiliary rolling mill equipment and attachments.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

1. Work involves routine through complex duties, highly variable in nature, requiring considerable care to effectively repair or make parts.
2. Position, fit, and weld components to assemble structural forms, machinery frames, plant equipment, attachments or accessories, and building parts, according to blueprints or knowledge of structural and metal characteristics.
3. Select equipment or material, plan layout, assembly and welding or bolting.
4. Clamp, bolt, or track weld parts to secure them in position for fabricating and welding.
5. Build and repair water headers and water deflectors for mill stands. Guide bins for mill guides.
6. Perform fabrication and other repairs on a variety of rolling mill equipment. This equipment includes troughs, guiding equipment, bell mouths, mill stands, rest bars, and charge tables.
7. Keep up with a proper supply of rolling mill equipment that is necessary for production of steel products from the rolling mill.
8. Disconnect and reconnect any electrical, hydraulic, grease, and water lines on the equipment that needs to be repaired.
9. Use different types of welding equipment as well as various types of cutting equipment.
10. Inspect and lubricate equipment as required and perform other duties and work assignments as required and directed.
11. Maintain and repair mill stand dial indicators, mill torches, mill stand grease fittings, and other auxiliary rolling mill equipment.
12. Observes and promotes all safety and 5’S standards

Additional Responsibilities:

1. Work in close cooperation and coordination with rolling and roll shop personnel, skilled maintenance personnel and outside vendors.
2. Assist in diagnosis of problems, servicing and repair of a variety of rolling mill equipment.
3. Perform other duties and work assignments as required or directed.
4. Assist with plant housekeeping efforts and perform other duties and work assignments as required and directed.
5. When operating mobile equipment and/or overhead cranes, follow all prescribed safety guidelines and perform daily checks to insure equipment is maintained in proper working order.
6. Light reheat furnace as needed and assist Roughing Mill Furnace Operator on days.

Experience and Skill Requirements

EDUCATION Knowledge of rolling mill operations; requires use of structural mechanical knowledge, drawings, charts, and specifications together with the use of adjustable measuring instruments requiring interpretation of their various applications. Requires working knowledge of welding, burning, fitting, and fabrication. 

EXPERIENCE Over 2 years up to and including 3 years.

INITIATIVE AND INGENUITY Requires the use of considerable judgment to plan and perform unusual and difficult work pertaining to the adjustment and repair to rolling equipment, auxiliary attachments, and supplementary apparatus. 

PHYSICAL DEMAND Moderate physical effort in lifting or moving lightweight material in difficult work positions or occasionally lifting or moving heavyweight material. 

MENTAL OR VISUAL DEMAND Continuous mental and visual attention; diversified repair and fabrication operations requiring constant alertness or activity. 
RESPONSIBILITY FOR EQUIPMENT OR PROCESS Responsible for hand tools, grinders, welding and burning equipment, occasional use of machine tools. Probable damage seldom over $250. 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR MATERIAL OR PRODUCT Responsible for casting accessories repair and availability, improper repairs may cause material loss. Probable loss seldom over $1,000

RESPONSIBILITY FOR SAFETY OF OTHERS Inattention or careless operation of tools or handling of equipment may cause lost-time injury to others such as crushed hand or foot, loss of fingers or toes, and burns.


WORKING CONDITIONS Somewhat disagreeable working conditions. Exposed to heat, noise, vibration, dirt, and water with at least one continuously present to the extent of being objectionable.

HAZARDS Injuries, should they occur, may result in loss of time due to crushed hand or foot, loss of fingers or toes, eye injuries, or burns. 3 15
