Position Overview

Are you interested in starting a technical career in Industrial Maintenance? Do you lack experience, yet have a high level of technical aptitude? Looking to further develop the mechanical skills you already have? CMC Steel Oklahoma is currently accepting applications for a Mechanical Apprentice. In this role, apprentices will maintain, repair, and overhaul industrial equipment and facilities. The apprentice interprets work orders, technical manuals, schematics and mechanical drawings; keeps equipment cleaned, lubricated and maintained; diagnoses faults or malfunctions; adjusts equipment and repairs or replaces defective parts, components or systems. Ensures that the work done meets manufacturers' specifications. Note, acceptance in the Mechanic Apprentice opportunity does not guarantee promotion into a Mechanic role, as commitment to learning and proven success in the role will be required for further progression.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

• Understands all health, safety, and environmental compliance standards, regulations and policies. Demonstrates safe work practices and behaviors. Regularly inspects for, reports, and corrects unsafe or hazardous conditions. Actively participates in the site Safety Program.
• Observing, learning and understanding a wide range of mechanical skills and processes while under the instruction of skilled technical staff.
• Ability to demonstrate these skills and processes as training progresses by producing results independently or in a team, to undertake tasks as instructed while increasing overall contribution to the department.
• Troubleshoots and repairs equipment to maximize safe and productive operations.
• Inspects equipment for condition and proper operation
• Tests equipment to troubleshoot problems or confirm repairs to ensure proper and safe operation.
• Reads and interprets condition reports, and/or repair orders, communicates with necessary personnel for clarification of problems. Answers emergency calls to make repairs on equipment.
• Uses a large array of hand and power tools, precision measuring instruments, test equipment, and mobile equipment such as fork lifts and man lifts.

 

Experience and Skill Requirements

• Must be a self-starter with the ability to follow directions and work in a team environment with minimal supervision.
• Must be dedicated to learning the mechanical trade, willing to put in the extra time and effort to build knowledge and gain experience.
• Must manage time appropriately, meeting hard deadlines.
• Good trouble shooting and problem solving skills are required.
• Good interpersonal and communication skills are required.
• Basic personal computer and corporate standard software skills (MS Word, Excel) are required.
• Exposure to heat, noise, heights, confined spaces, poor lighting conditions, material, products and by-products associated with the manufacturing of steel
• Required to climb stairs, ladders and scaffolding to access elevations, able to crouch for periods of time, push, pull, lift and turn while carrying tools, material and equipment in various parts of the facility.
• Must be willing to work rotating shifts and overtime to support a 24/7 operation.

Education Requirements

• Minimum high school diploma/GED
• 2 year College Diploma from an Industrial Mechanic Technician program or equivalent is preferred
