Billet Crane Operator (5587)

Position Overview

The Overhead Crane operator supports production in both the Melt Shop and Rolling Mill. The crane operator utilizes an overhead crane equipped with magnets to remove billet from the caster cooling bed and transports the billets to either a storage area or directly loads the billet onto a charge table for feeding the reheat furnace for the rolling mill. Occasionally billets are loaded on to either trucks or rail cars for shipment.

The employee is responsible for his/her safety and housekeeping throughout the billet yard. 

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Safe movement of steel throughout the facility utilizing an overhead crane equipped with magnets for lifting steel billets
  • Responsible for correct placement of steel product in the proper locations
  • Responsible for proper movement of the steel product from one production area to another
  • Job requires operator to quickly move steel product at times to prevent production delays in the melt shop or rolling mill
  • Operator must be able to perform simple computer operations involving the receipt of billets, removal of billets from inventory when charged to the mill and the ability to follow a scheduled charging list
  • Operator must be able to communicate clearly by radio at times with both the melt shop and rolling mill
  • Crane operator is expected to maintain the crane cab in a clean and non-cluttered manner and perform a standard checklist before operating the crane
  • At times the operator may be required to perform inventory cycle counting and housekeeping activities throughout the billet yard
Experience and Skill Requirements
  • 1-2 years heavy equipment experience or 1-2 years overhead crane experience
  • Basic computer skills required
  • Effective communication skills required
  • Ability to work well with others required
  • Ability to work unsupervised required
  • Ability to follow instructions required
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail required
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. required
  • Ability to work at heights required
  • Must be able to work a 12-hour rotating shift and some holidays
Education Requirements

High School Diploma or equivalent required.
