Forklift Operator/Material Sorter (5332)

Position Overview

We are currently seeking a Forklift Operator/Material Sorter to join the Non-Ferrous Department at our CMC Houston Recycling location. The Forklift Operator/Material Sorter will learn many different facets of the scrap business. In this role, the Forklift Operator/Material Sorter will be trained to sort ferrous and non-ferrous materials. They will also be trained to operate mobile equipment to load or unload and transport material throughout the facility to meet customer and operational needs in a safe and efficient manner. Successful candidates will have a strong safety mindset and a desire to learn.

This position works an eight (8) hour shift Monday thru Friday; which may include some overtime to include at least four (4) hours on Saturday. If you are looking for an opportunity to grow your career, this is the job for you!

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Ensures ferrous and non-ferrous products are up to quality specifications for both internal and external customers.
  • Processes and transports different types of material throughout the facility for operational and customer utilization in a safe manner.
  • Operates fixed equipment such as can blower and stationary saw.
  • Operates mobile equipment such as Forklift and Wheel Loaders.
  • Prioritizes operational and customer orders to move materials throughout the shift.
  • Inspects forklift and or all mobile equipment daily before use.
  • Submits requests to provide preventative maintenance of forklift and or all mobile equipment as required.
  • Shows a safety-first mindset; recommends improvements to make the workplace safer for self and others.
  • Willing to learn; enjoys tackling new challenges.
  • Is organized and shows attention to detail, with a "get it right the first time" mindset.
  • Demonstrates dependability in attendance, work completion, and flexibility to meet business needs.

  • Ability to stand for duration of shift, up to 8 hours; frequent physical activity such as walking or reaching throughout the entire day.
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 25 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Push and pull up to 90 lbs. and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with exposure to extremes in temperature, chemical, dust fumes and mists, uneven surfaces, and loud noise.
  • Ability to work with exposure to mechanical parts and electrical currents.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
Experience and Skill Requirements
  • Minimum 1 year mechanical background to be familiar with production areas and the associated equipment.
  • Minimum 1 year experience driving a forklift.
  • Ability to recall scrap commodities and operating procedures.
  • Ability to secure and transport loads safely.
  • Ability to document and maintain procedures and record keeping for equipment.
  • Basic computer skills such as familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word) required.
  • Must speak and understand English language in verbal communication.
  • Must be able to work an eight (8) hour shift Monday thru Friday; which may include some overtime to include at least four (4) hours on Saturday.
  • Ability to work in various types of weather conditions which include extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to use effective listening skills to identify important information and to engage internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work in non-temperature controlled environments.
  • Ability to perform some heavy manual work.
  • Must be safety oriented.
Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred
