Position Overview

Commercial Metals Company is currently seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator Trainee to join the CMC Steel Texas team, to provide critical support to day to day plant operations. Steel Texas is one of CMC’s eleven steel mills that have a combined annual capacity of almost eight million tons. By producing steel from recycled metal in electric arc furnaces, we consume far fewer natural resources than blast furnace steelmakers. Using recycled metal allows us to lower CO2 emissions by 58%. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Train in all areas of the Yard Department to include operating various types of mobile and fixed equipment including forklifts, in-plant trucks, rail car movers and loaders. Training includes required hours for each job position and practical test to be a qualified operator.
  • Remove side boards from road trailers and prepare trailers for outbound deliveries.
  • Interpret all operational procedures and parameters, including Job Safety Analysis and Work Instructions.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
  • Shows a safety first mindset; recommends improvements to make the workplace safer for self and others.
  • Willing to learn; enjoys tackling new challenges.
  • Is organized and shows attention to detail, with a "get it right the first time" mindset.
  • Demonstrates dependability in attendance, work completion, and flexibility to meet business needs.

  • Ability to stand for duration of shift, up to 12 hours; frequent physical activity such as walking, climbing stairs or reaching to work with equipment throughout the entire shift.
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 25 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Push and pull up to 90 lbs. and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with exposure to extremes in temperature, chemical, dust fumes and mists, uneven surfaces, loud noise, elevated work areas, and confined spaces.
  • Ability to work with exposure to mechanical parts and electrical currents.
Experience and Skill Requirements
  • No less than 3 years of field experience in either an operations and or manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to document and maintain procedures and record keeping for equipment.
  • Basic computer skills such as familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word) required. SAP experience a plus.
  • Must speak and understand English language in verbal communication.
  • Forklift, Crane, or experience operating heavy machinery preferred.
  • Must be able to work a 12 hour shift, which include overtime, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in various types of weather conditions which include extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to use effective listening skills to identify important information and to engage internal and external customers.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work.
Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
