Position Overview

We are currently seeking a Material Sorter to join the Ferrous and Non-Ferrous Department at our CMC Recycling Corpus location. The Material Sorter will learn many different facets of the scrap business. They will be trained to sort ferrous and non-ferrous materials to meet customer’s needs in a safe and efficient manner. They will also be trained to operate mobile equipment. Successful candidates will have a strong safety mindset and a desire to learn.

This position works an 8 hour shift Monday thru Friday; which may include some overtime, weekends and holidays. If you are looking for an opportunity to grow your career, this is the job for you!

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Ensure ferrous or non-ferrous products are up to quality specifications of both internal and external customers.
  • Operate some fixed equipment such as can blower to smash cans and blow into container.
  • Operate various mobile equipment such as Forklift to weigh materials for customers.
  • Shows a safety first mindset; recommends improvements to make the workplace safer for self and others.
  • Willing to learn; enjoys tackling new challenges.
  • Is organized and shows attention to detail, with a "get it right the first time" mindset.
  • Demonstrates dependability in attendance, work completion, and flexibility to meet business needs.
  • Works well with team members or independently; gives and receives feedback in a constructive manner.
  • Makes timely and sound decisions; uses resources wisely.
  • Displays a positive, can-do attitude; maintains composure when faced with difficult situations.
  • Ability to stand for duration of shift, up to 8 hours; frequent physical activity such as walking or reaching throughout the entire day.
  • Must be able to frequently lift up to 25 lbs., and occasionally lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Push and pull up to 90 lbs. and carry 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work with exposure to extremes in temperature, chemical, dust fumes and mists, uneven surfaces, and loud noise.
  • Ability to work with exposure to mechanical parts and electrical currents.
  • Perform additional duties as needed.
Experience and Skill Requirements
  • Ability to recall scrap commodities and operating procedures.
  • Ability to document and maintain procedures and record keeping for equipment.
  • Basic computer skills such as familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word) required.
  • Must speak and understand English language in verbal communication.
  • Ability to operate a forklift preferred.
  • Must be able to work an 8 hour shift Monday thru Friday; which may include some overtime, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in various types of weather conditions which include extreme heat and cold.
  • Ability to use effective listening skills to identify important information and to engage internal and external customers.
  • Ability to perform some heavy manual work.
  • Must be safety oriented.
Education Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.
