Position Overview

Commercial Metals Company is currently seeking a Quality Assurance Technician to start a career in the Quality Assurance Department. This position acts as the primary monitor of internal specifications to ensure products meet or exceed customer expectations, while aiding in the maintenance of the Quality Management Systems and keeping a safety-first mindset. The QA Technician is the primary technical resource for all testing laboratories and work in minimize non-prime product inventory. The QA technician will be responsible for checking the chemical and physical properties of steel, cutting scrap, and inspecting billets. This role also assists in minimizing overall product costs by improving overall product quality.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Sample hot bar product from Rolling Mill cooling bed and/or cold shear locations
  • Operate overhead crane in support of inventory control of steel billets
  • Use Precision measuring instruments to ensure products meets physical specifications
  • Take accurate measurements of steel samples using micrometers and calipers
  • Prepare and Load billets for outside customer shipments
  • Use of gas/oxygen cutting torch and various power equipment to process and test the steel samples
  • Perform the sampling and testing functions of the Quality Assurance laboratory to support the Melt Shop and Rolling Mill
  • Perform data entry of test results and inventory into CMC computer systems
  • Perform light to medium lifting of steel samples
  • Perform additional duties as needed
Experience and Skill Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • No less than 1 year of field experience in either an operations and or manufacturing environment.
  • Basic computer skills such as familiarity with Microsoft Office (Word) required. SAP experience a plus.
  • Ability to read and operate measuring instruments.
  • Ability to follow specified methods, procedures, and processes.
  • Forklift, Crane, or experience operating heavy machinery preferred.
  • Ability to perform a wide range of physical activity which includes balancing, pulling, stooping, reaching positions and climb ladders to access elevated stock locations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50lbs and work in non-temperature controlled environments.
  • Must be able to work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule, which include overtime, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work in various types of weather conditions which include extreme heat and cold.
